After proposing my final undergraduate thesis several times to Pangkalpinang City Planning Agency (BAPPEDA), but no response, I decided to make my thesis go public. My thesis was remote sensing study of urban heat island phenomenon in Pangkalpinang City, Bangka Belitung Province, Indonesia. It is the first time such study is done in medium sized city of Indonesia, also it is located outside Java Island that usually under surveyed.

Title: Urban Heat Island in Pangkalpinang City in Years 2000 and 2006
Urbanization can induce the urban-rural contrast in temperature. This phenomenon is known as Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. Taking Pangkalpinang City as a case study due to its rapid development, this study utilized Landsat images to analyze the spatial patterns of surface temperatures for years 2000 and 2006 and surface temperature - land cover, vegetation density (NDVI), built-up and/or bare land density (NDBI) relationships. The results showed that UHI regions increased, urban and bare land had the highest mean surface temperatures, vegetation density and surface temperature correlated negatively, and built-up and/or bare land density and surface temperature correlated positively. Keywords: urban heat island, surface temperature, Landsat, Pangkalpinang, spatial pattern, land cover, NDVI, NDBI.
